Greetings from Almaty.
Yes we made it, and yes we are all fine. As everything is, internet service is very expensive at the Hyatt, and so we are using internet cafes to check email. Without our usual systems and Macs in place, I'm not sure we will have new photos up before we get home, though to be sure, we are taking them, so bear with us.
Aitugan continues her defiant sleep patterns, refusing to sleep more than 5-6 hours at a time at night, and napping only an hour or two a day, and most of it when we are carrying her to and from the supermarket/internet cafe, so not exactly great times for us to sleep as well. Once we are back at the hotel, she is all for being awake, even if her best version of awake includes rubbing her eyes, yawning, fussing and crying.
We have taken to putting her in the carrier that we have(Ergo Carrier) and walking laps around our floor. Fortunately the Hyatt made sure to utilize as little interior space as possible and therefor has a ten story high center column that is open to a skylight dome with rooms set up in rings around the perimeter. This creates great visual entertainment for Aitugan to peer over the railing and look down upon the dining and lounge areas below complete with a piano bar, full sized yurt, and fountain.
The Hyatt really is quite a visually appealing hotel from the inside, though the exterior and grounds, at least at this time of year, sure don't strike one as a 5 star hotel. Among the inside attractions is a wonderful pool area. Again it is too bad we are not able to post photos at this point - but we will when we are able.
We took Aitugan to the pool last evening for her first swim, and she loved it as we expected she would. Of course KJ - being prepared for eveything - brought a special suit for Aitugan to swim in at the hotel. It is essntially a neoprene wetsuit cut such that there is a brief bottom that goes over the diaper followed by a 'shorty' style body suit with velco along one side. It could not be simpler, and provides nice buoyancy and warmth. Aitugan seemed to love every bit of her time there and we will definitely do it everyday until we leave.
So leaving - we won't know until tomorrow afternoon when exactly our US Embassy Interview is, but it seems quite likely to happen Monday such that we should be cleared to fly home Tuesday morning. Yesterday we had her medical exam and HIV test performed, and all seemd to go just fine.
We are hoping to meet up tomorrow afternoon with another couple from Rhode Island who are in town completing their adoption. It will be the first time that Aitugan will have had the opprtunity to interact with another child in more than a week (since she left the Baby House, and though we are happy for that, we are perhaps more excited to meet Jennifer and marshall and share experiences and just reconfirm our sanity.
We will leave you with that for now. KJ is strolling around the mall carrying a near sleeping Aitugan and so now we will trade off and she will come and check her email. I hope that everyone at home is well and that the holidays are providing a time to be with family and just to take time for each other. Take Care.

Great to see that you guys are starting to make you way home. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Happy to see that you are getting so close to leaving. I'm sure you are really looking forward to traveling. With all the newness of Aitugan's world right now I'd guess that she's probably will not be able to settle into a good sleep pattern till you get home. Hang in there. In many respects it's very much the same as coming home from the hospital with a newborn. Sure books say newborn babies sleep 18 hrs a day but none of mine ever did that and it took a while to get to know them and help them learn to sleep. Consistent sleep routine patterns of getting ready for bed really helps but in your current state you can't really get any of that started very well yet.
You'll be in my thoughts.
We're leaving tomorrow to drive from Virginia up to Smuggler's Notch in VT! By the time I return home YOU should be in your home too and I'll look forward to seeing pics of Aitugan safely with you at HER house.
Merry Christmas!
Take care,
:)
Monica
Steve, KJ and Aitugan,
It is fantastic to hear that you have continued to make progress to coming home. I am thrilled for when life becomes "normal" and you get to start identifying routines and swim lesson days at the Y.
For today, I am thrilled you are enjoying the atrium and pool at the Hyatt. I think gathering with R.I. friends sounds perfect. I hope that your Christmas this year will include a flight and a restful "sleep" at home.
Best Holiday Wishes,
L,
JAACKL
Glad all are doing well except perhaps somewhat sleep deprived. Truly once we got Sadie home in her bed after a week she adjusted beautifully. She is still not a great napper but goes down around 7 to 7:30 and sleeps until 6 to 7 a.m. Depending on when she hears her brothers up and about (sadly they aren't as good of night time sleepers).
I laughed when we had physcial custody of Sadie and saw that she supposidly slept 6 hours a day. I think being in their crib counts as nap time, not actual sleep time.
Sadie to this day won't sleep if there is a lot going on. I truly have to isolate her in order to get her to sleep. In Kaz I would take a blanket to use as blinders so things wouldn't be as appealing. She would fuss or scream for a minute or so and then pass out because she was exhausted and the distractions were gone.
Of course, nothing is the same for any of our babies, except not many of them seemed to sleep well while in Kaz.
On a positive note, maybe she will be so exhausted that once home she will have very little difficulty adjusting to the new time difference.
If you get the opportunity, try to go on the gondola, or cable car, whatever you want to call it, to the top of the mountain. It is beautiful and worth it. Great souvenir shops as well.
Wow that is the coolest time to be in Kaz. All the family blogs I'm reading and you're all meeting up - The Morgans (home now). The Woods. Jen & Marshall and you guys.
How cool is that> Its like when the cast of Law & Order SVU meets up with the cast of Law & Order classic (well sort of).
SO happy you are going to meet with our family! Please give each of the three of them big hugs from Trudi & Dad!
Don't be too concerned about the sleep issues - when you get home it will settle down. AND if you swim her enough at the Hyatt, she will probably knock herself out!
I loved Almaty, it was a lot of fun. Definately take the Gondola ride if you can and it is open in the winter. Say hi to jen and Marshall.
Try the turkey and brie sandwich at the "Yurt Bar." It was yummy and a welcomed treat! :-)

How fun you can meet Jen and Marshall....your "internet friends" come to life.
HOw does Aitugan like the ergo carrier? That is the one I bought for when we go to Kaz.
Does that make her go to sleep? I've talked to a few other "baby wearer" Mom's i know that say that "wearing the baby" makes them fall asleep....
Great to hear you made it there fine and the hotel is nice! Hopefully you can get home Christmas day!
I'm so glad you and the Robinsons are getting together! I've been in close touch with them over the past several months, having spoken on the phone with Jen before they left, and having a great, hourlong Skype talk while they were still in Semey. I think that you will enjoy their company very much! (You and Marshall are two of the best blog writers out there.)
I can't wait to see Aitugan's pool pictures. It's so sweet and fascinating that she is such a water baby.
I hope you can all get some good, solid rest soon. That's one of my biggest fears -- Frank and I both need our sleep to feel sane!
Oh boy, Christmas day would be a good day to come home, no? :-)
