Here come some photos from the last several days.
We will begin with our Astana apartment. We took these just before we walked out the door for the last time. You can be sure that it never looked so go during the time we were living there.
For reasons that remain mysterious, there appear to be many a bed throughout Kazakhstan comprised solely of a box spring, and lacking even a semblance of a mattress. Maybe it's a function of a misguided lay-a-way program, or maybe simply regional differences in sleep habits, but it takes some getting used to for those of us who consider the mattress a fairly integral part of the whole sleep system.
Before leaving Astana for good, I had to stop by the Ice City one last time. Though unfortunately we did not get to see it completed this year, I enjoyed watching the process immensely.
Unfortunately it is difficult to get a sense of the massive size of this wall of wild horses running. Take my word for it, it is impressive.
And lastly tonight, Marshall, Jennifer, and Aila Robinson, our new friends from Rhode Island.

Thanks for one last posting from the Ice City.
Extraordinary efforts and amazing results captured by an extraordinary photographer, husband and FATHER.
LOVE and safe travels on Christmas to all.
Of course the best way to spend Christmas would be at home, but second best is definitely landing in the U.S. with your new daughter and our newest Amercian citizen.......how cool will that be to write......born....adopted...home forever December 25th.
I was so jealous lookiing at your pictures of your apartment in Astana. Once you are home and settled, I'll have to share pictures with you of our lovely, I mean scary apartment, well bathroom! Yikes!
Oh, ps. the photos of A in the pool are incredible as are so many of your photos!
I just left this post on Jen and Marshall's blog, and wanted to share the message and the same sentiments to you both:
"It was so fun to read your blog and the blog of Kjersten and Steve this morning and find pictures of each family on the other's blog. I've been following both of your trips and it was a treat for me to read how you've all connected.
Cheers to your adoption successes and the new connections that it brings!"
Congratulations from another "Mainer" who will hopefully be traveling in February!
Hey there, thank you for sharing the photos. The ice City looks incredible! What an experience! Also thank you for sharing the photo of the makeshift crib! Very intersting. Your girl is so cute in the pool!
You are truly an extraordinary photographer - I so enjoy your postings. The ice sculptures are just amazing and your apartment in Astana was very pleasant--methinks you were at the top of the food chain from what I read on other blogs. And the Hyatt is the Hyatt -could be anywhere! Thank you especially for posting the photo of Jen, Marshall & Aila. It is wonderful you met.
We just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas! We hope you enjoy your holiday as a new family! Spoil Aitugan rotten and enjoy every minute of her first Christmas with you:) Best wishes for a happy holiday and a safe journey home!!
Warm wishes from Chicago,
Kim & Jamie
your pictures are so amazing!!! wow!!
My sister has a really nice SLR camera that she wants to let me borrow for Kaz. I told her about how amazing your pictures were==isn't she sweet? Now, i will have tofigure out how to use it.
Merry Merry Christmas!! You need to make a book with your photo's and sell it and pay for Aitguan's college education with the proceeds. I know we'd all buy one. :)
OK, its 11:30 at night on the 23 and I keep checking back for updates only to find none. I hope this means you are busy packing for the trip home. Hope you two manage to wrap up the last of your details without any problems. Now I have to go to work on Christmas eve and find your phone number so I can call your parents for the latest update.
Hopefully you will be home in time to hit all the after Christmas sales for baby clothes....
Have a safe trip and see ya soon.
Love Dessie
