Now that was a good day...

in the slammer.

We had so many new faces and sounds from Nurai today.  She is getting healthier everyday and we no longer believe she is sick and suffering from Diarrhea as she was last week, though no one seems able to confirm this for us.

Given that a week ago she was weak and lethargic, and was presented to us with a tube taped inside her nose, she has become an entirely different little girl since then, and we could not be more happy to watch this transformation.

We had giggles, laughs, smiles, hugs, loving stares, inquisitive touches, and even dimples.  Who knew those were in there?  Tougy relishes her new role as big sister and so enjoys holding Nurai on her lap and reading to her.

Tougy's favorite book of the moment is Where The Wild Things Are, and she no longer allows us to read any of it, instead insisting that she read it to us, and of course now to her little sister.  Tougy is a born performer, and never disappoints a willing audience.  Several times here in country she has found a stage or other appropriate venue to sing and dance to any and all who would listen.

At the Baby House, Tougy is quickly becoming a big hit as well with her Russian phrases and general charm.  It is fun to watch though, as mentioned before, we know that she would be happier back at school with her friends.

Tougy has taken to life here amazingly well all in all I must say.  Before coming over, I worried about her feeling cooped-up and isolated, but of course I underestimate her resilience.  While I don't think she is yet of an age to more fully comprehend all that is going on (and for that matter neither do I) she is at a point where these experiences will stay with her as she gets older and we can fill in the significance of it all well after the fact to be matched up with her memory.

I would have to say that through this experience, she is becoming so much more aware of her own beginnings.  She verbalizes that she was born here in Kazakhstan and that we came to get her at the Astana Baby House, just as we are now here to make Nurai a part of our family here at the Baby House in Shymkent.

I don't know if we will be able to make it happen, but we talk of finding a time to get up to Astana for a day or so to visit her Baby House before we all head back.  I think that in another week or so when we know our court date, such plans can be looked at in earnest.

Tomorrow morning we take Nurai for a CT scan of her abdomen to verify and or refute statements and diagnoses found in her medical history.  Not expecting it to be a big deal either way, just looking for clarification.  It will be nice to get her out of the Baby House for a bit and to have her away from the watchful eyes of the caregivers and staff there.

Off to bed now as we continue to have a difficult time catching up on sleep given that we are with Tougy when she is awake, and feverishly trying to keep in touch when she is asleep.  Given how little Tougy seems to be sleeping lately, it is a losing strategy.  Take Care.

Each day, Nurai looks more and more Morrison.

P.S. You can view that as a compliment, by the way. :)

Just Beautiful glimpses and smiles under your masks. Have you peaked under Nurai's cap? Another mystery?

Love to all. I can close my eyes and "see" and "hear" Tougy on stage. Makes my heart sing along.

She is such a precious little girl! She looks like she fits right in with your family!
Glad to hear she is feeling better and you are seeing progress in her abilities!
We adopted from Shymkent and were there from April-June of 2008. We had a pretty good experience overall. I am so sorry to hear that you are in temporary surroundings. That makes things much more difficult all around, I am sure.
Even though this has been a long, difficult road, we are thrilled for you and your new daughter! We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers during bonding, court and your return to the States and back to Kaz!

Oh - smiles already - and dimples! Another heartwarming story with touching photos. Tougy is going to be such a help in Nurai's progress. Love abounds!

P.S. I'm curious about Nurai's hair - remembering Tougy's standy-up strands! How gorgeous it is now! I was going to comment on her cute braids, but it is so pretty down too.

Oooh dimples! And 2 of them, no less. Noah has one and I am such a sucker for dimples. Both of those girls are too delicious for words. I would think twice before you ever bring them to Vermont. I can't promise I won't gobble them up;)
Thanks for the update. I love having your blog to look forward to with my morning coffee.

Nurai seems to be responding quickly to her new found familiy. With every new picture I see more and more of the sparkle and glitter you so lovingly sprinkled on Tougy and now on baby sister Nurai.

The pictures are wonderful--Nurai looks so relaxed, happy and as if she has known you 3 for ever. Tougy will be a wonderful big sister. I am so happy for you and will look forward to meeting all of you next summer, when we are back in Maine. God Bless, Jan Marshall---(friend of Susan's)

And so the blossoming begins with your care and attention; petal by petal unfolds and Nurai's beauty begins to shine...

The dimples are awesome - love them.

So very happy for you all.

Love and attention are amazing medicine. Sending prayers that the CT scan is clear. Wow, that picture of the room puts it all in perspective -- major claustrophia. Tougy is an amazingly resilient little girl -- a tribute to her parents!

What a difference a week makes, 'eh? There is now sparkle in Nurai's eyes -- just as their always has been in Tougy's. I am not a bit surprised that Tougy is the **star** of Shymkent. She is quite an unusual child. I do wish that Nurai could go home with you. I just hate the thought of her losing that contact with you even for 2 weeks because she has come such a long way so quickly. I hope the CT scan comes out fine - I have one of those next week and I cannot imagine how they'll get a clear picture with a wiggly baby who won't know how to hold her breath. You'll have to clue me in on how they do it with a baby.

You guys are awesome! Big hugs to the stars of the show.

Just beautiful to see such happy moments! I love that the girls favor each other (to me, at least)....it just is the way it should be. :) Hope you get up to Astana! We can't wait to get Nick back hopefully sooner rather than later as he was older and can remember some of the process especially with pictures holding them in his memory. What a journey it all is. So happy for you all!

OH MY GOODNESS! Seeing her smile, her dimples and her sweet face all scrunched up just made my day! The photos are so clear and detailed it seems I could reach out and touch her from here. How amazing to see her progress and respond to her new family!

It's wonderful how this experience will become significant and meaningful for Tougy. She is such a little trooper. She and Milo need to go on the road together!

What a sweet big sister Tougy is! Love the photos of her holding Nurai. Her expression in the Wild Things picture made me laugh.

You've got three beautiful girls there Mr. Morrison.

Nurai has such a sweet smile! I am glad she's feeling better and that she's warming up to you. I'm also happy that Tougy is doing so well. I hope you're able to arrange a visit to Astana. I know the care givers would be so happy to see Tougy, and it would be a wonderful experience for her, too.

Look at that face light up with Nurai laughs!! Oh my goodness, pure sunshine!!

I love seeing Tougy holding her baby sister. I'm so happy she is taking to her role of big sister!

They are so beautiful individually and then together! Breath-taking actually.

Through pictures it appears that Nurai is thriving with little bit of time you have been her lives. Imagine what is to come for all of you!

XOXO, Kristan

And, as certainly noted in these stuning pics of her lil sister..SO IS SHE! Oh my gosh..I love her lil nose crinkle and her laugh..and how tender Tougy is to her.

You are so blessed....wow.

What adorable photos as usual. Love those faces. And Tougy is quite the story-teller. I remember how social she was in Nashville! I was thinking that it was girls but now I'm thinking it's Tougy! Miras has started wanting to "read" stories to us too at bedtime. Very cute at this age.

It sounds like you don't have ideal circumstances but are making do. Of course, things always seem worse while you are living it and become a fond memory afterwards. In fact, we still become sentimental talking about our time in Kaz and how great it was doing nothing but bonding with our son and socializing.

Those dimples just made my day! Although for your sake, I hope you could be bonding in more than what sounds like a closet without a door!!
Prayers and hugs to all 4 of you!

beautiful photos once again! :) I can't blame you to come back & wait, when we were in-country for Gunnar our oldest son came home with Thad while I stayed behind. Jabari was over being in Kazakhstan by then. :)
At 3.5 being in a car for 3 hours a day plus a 2 hour visit was just not fun at all. He remembers it though & that made it SO worth taking him along.
