Our last outing in Almaty
The Cathedral of the Holy Ascension
24 hours from now we will be in Frankfurt getting ready to board our flight to Boston. I still can't believe how quickly this week has gone.
Nurai continues to be terrific. She is really bonding with us and gives large broad smiles with her accompanying dimples when she is happy.
We went for a good walk this morning and I had Nurai in the Ergo Carrier the whole time. If you ever want to see some interesting reactions and long blatant stares from both Kazakh men and women, follow a man wearing a baby while his wife walks beside him.
We are so looking forward to getting home and reunited Tougy and her sister Nurai. What a great moment that will be. Realizing that all of this is in the past and a family of four is our future.

Your writing is always just as beautiful as your photography. I recognize the old man in the hat in front of the cathedral. I took a close up of him last month - makes me sad to see him still sitting there in the same spot.
How does your back do with the Ergo? I always envisioned getting one but also didn't realize I'd be starting using it with a child that was older? I wonder if he'll take to it.

what wonderful photos and sentiments! I remember it like it was yesterday...I got "in trouble" for mistakenly going into a restricted/holy part of the altar (over eight years ago!). BAD! We must meet and share stories someday...

I wish you could have been out of your body and taken some of your great pictures of the reactions :) Gotta love the cultural differences. That cathedral is so pretty. I missed so much while in Almaty. In some ways I wish I could have stayed there longer and, as you know, in other ways I was ready to get the heck home sweet home. Best wishes for your flights home with Nurai.
Wow - great photos of the Holy Ascension Cathedral. The art work is so breath-taking!! Brings back memories!! We got a lovely cross on a chain there for our Russian daughter from Kaz. Glad you got such great interior shots! When we were there, it was "nyet" to indoor photos! Have fun and a good trip home. Best wishes, Joan : )

As I type it's Saturday morning here in Maine -- sun's UP and the temp's just above freezing ...imagine that!
We're hoping you three are somewhere in the vicinity of Frankfurt -- hopefully leaving! What an adventure!

Wohoooo. Happy travels! Also, there are great showers at the Frankfurt airport. They are upstairs around the corner from McDonalds, across from the currency exchange. Walk through the (always packed) sitting area through the door in the back and there will be an attendant there. It is money well spent. They provide towels, shampoo and conditioner, soap, razors, combs basically everything.
Can't wait to read the post that you are HOME!
Your pictures of that magical church are astounding. My father and I had quite a moment there during our week in Almaty. When we got there, they wer ein servuce and there was a choir of 8 people singing hymns. They sounded like angels. It brought me to unstoppable tears and awoke such a combination of appreciation and love, but also of mourning the country we would soon leave behind which had given me so much and which had been home to my daughter for her first 9 months.
Thank you for sharing those pictures. It has awoken those same feelings for me again.

amazing pics....and you are awesome carrying the kiddo. I think the only time Joe wore the ergo was at the baby house, MAYBE ONCE. however, as a type this, Leeza is all snuggled up with him on the couch, so I guess she likes him ok. :)

How did I miss that cathedral? Wow, gorgeous. But not as gorgeous as one Miss Nurai! I'm glad to hear she is well and showing those dimples on a regular basis. Way to go, Steve, on bucking the cultural differences. Ya freak show! :-) I always like to see the required Beatles / Apple photos from Kok Tobe.
