19 November 2007

Yesterday was a lazy day around here, and hopefully everyone out there had a nice Sunday as well.

I awoke early today to listen to the Patriots/Bills 'game', and found that my brother Jamie had set up his computer in front of the TV in Chicago so that I could watch the game live on my computer here in Astana. Thanks Jamie!

So after a little Monday Morning Football, the afternoon of course finally brought another visit with Aitugan. Due to some unexplained loophole in logic, the space between Saturday's visit and Monday's visit appears to grow exponentially as the weeks go by.

As you can see in the photo below, our little 'Tugy' has a rash on her cheek. We have seen it come and go during our time here, and have been told that it is caused by an intolerance to sugars. This latest outbreak seems to have been triggered by a cold syrup she was given to help relieve congestion in her chest.

Who knows whether this 'sensitivity' is fleeting or permanent, but for the time being she has been getting soy-based formula and a somewhat special diet to help minimize her reactions. Apart from our interpretation of their proclivity towards hyperthermia, the babies are well cared for and looked after.

In preparation for court next Monday morning, we have begun to make an effort to get a few shots a day of the three of us, as one thing the judge will want to see is photographic evidence that we visited Aitugan together on multiple occasions.

Aitugan was feverish and tired for much of our visit, and today, far more than we have seen in the past, was happy to lie on her back, be comforted by her parents, and enjoy the company of her new friend Almaz.

The fever also meant that at times she was not always the happy baby we most often portray. It could have been that she was not feeling well, or perhaps just that she realized that her good friend Berik(pictured below) was spending his last afternoon with her here in the play room.

We will miss you Berik and we wIsh you and your family a safe journey home to Germany and many wonderful years together. We hope you will keep in touch. Take Care.

I cannot explain it (I am a dietitian by trade) but the sugar thing for some reason is real. They told us the same thing everytime we saw something new on our son or when he was sick. He is three and we did take him some different snacks but not that sugar laden and we just didn't believe them. But, after we got home, it seems that if he has a higher sugar day (halloween!)or sometimes a just a piece of candy, he gets the sniffles or bumps! I give him benedryl and it doesn't get worse but I definitely can't deny that there is something going on. And, the days do get much longer, the longer you are there. They only allowed us to see Nick every other day after court so it was even worse. You are doing great and you are so lucky to have so many people to talk with and the circus looked fun. My husband and I were by ourselves in our town for 8 weeks. We only had our translator. PAINFUL! Happy Thanksgiving....a great one for you and us as well this year! Karen Kitzman

I was in Astana in June/July and my daughter got rash all over her face shortly after I met her. They said it was "too much sugar" and adjusted her diet accordingly. The rash cleared up. I was suspicious of this explanation, however, because there were a lot of kids with rashes and the explanation was always the same. The doctor gave me the name of a cream to buy for my daughter and when I left I bought several more tubes to leave at the Baby House. I don't know what it was. Now that we're home, my daughter doesn't seem to have any food allegies. She has one small patch on the side of her face that can turn into a rash every now and again. Her pediatrician says it's excema and that flare-ups are not food-related.

Tugy is beautiful! They told us the same thing about our daugher. Whenever she had a rash, they said she was allergic to sugar. They also had her on soy formula. Beware the soy formula when you get her back to the apartment as that caused our little one to be constipated. Make sure you give her plenty of juice to help with that. We wound up asking the doctor for something to help her out.

Now that we're home, she doesn't seem to have issues with sugar. But we did have a nasty reaction to Huggies diapers. She does fine with Pampers and other "cloth" like diapers, but the Huggies broke her out terribly.

I've been catching up on your blog and it looks like you are staying in the same apartment complex that we did while we were there. You have taken some beautiful pictures. If you wouldn't mind sharing, I would love to have some of them. You can e-mail me privately if you wish or check out our blog at www.kajin1.blogspot.com

Thanks,
